She might be really really small….but god she’s fast

Well the mighty morph has been pestering for some time to get a post onto our website hall of fame, but I wouldn’t let it happen until she delivered a champions worthy effort…..seems she has gone and done exactly that. Lara Hamlett completed the Snowman Legend Tri, an extremely difficult race even for a full sized adult. Read on to see how she did……

So the chairman has politely asked me to write a race report (Ed: everyone knows Polite is not in my repertoire!)  I know you’re surprised by that when has the chairman ever been polite to me! Anyway moving on the Snowman Legend Triathlon, 1.2mile swim, 91km bike and 13.1mile run all set in the beautifully picturesque  Snowdonia National Park or so the brochure said. As usual I arrived with my kit in my Christmas bag for life looking around at all the other competitors wondering why I’d got and of bed at 5am and convincing myself and G that this was a bad idea and I might as well go back to the b & b for breakfast as they all looked so professional, G made the point that I hadn’t ordered breakfast so “I might as well get on with it” (Ed: For those that done know Lara, ‘G’ is the suffering husband – and I meansuffering with a capital S). So in the lake I got (Ed: Not much displacement there), 2 laps later I emerged from the choppy, freezing waters to hear G tell me “you’re the first woman out, get pedaling” I already knew this as the lady in 2nd (Mrs W Booth ironically) thanked me  in transition for letting her draft behind me in the swim, charming (she also tried to convince me that I should draft next time as it was the way forward – it wasn’t til 5 miles in on the bike that I thought.. “but I beat you…”)!!
The bike course was beautiful and the sort Ste Hilton would scream past me after I had beaten him out of the swim again (Ed: Pfft). Power meter on… power zones in mind…and then promptly ignored it and cracked on…some great hills but nowhere near the same support as on hubsters hill, my motivation having to come from G chasing me around and drumming up support speaking his best Wigan Welsh!! So off the bike still first placed woman and only a few men had passed me, surely they’ll catch me on the run I thought given the fact I am rubbish at running (Ed: and there it is….). Well the run! The day before at registration  I was  told I need a bag to carry gloves, hat, leggings and waterproof jacket. This really should of set me thinking, what they should have had me carry was rope, karabiners and a harness.
The first 8 miles was an out and back “flat” trail and I was walking within the first mile…. Not a good start but worked out I was 2 miles in front of 2nd. When G told me I was 20mins ahead after the bike my first thought.. Not “check me out”… more like “fcs you are gonna lose a 20min lead you tool” but I kept going. The last 5 miles… As you’ve probably guessed this was more a walk and climb than run – the sort of only thing that only Richard Bardon would “enjoy” when in a particularly “happy” and sadistic mood (Ed: yes..I think we’ve all seen that mood on Bardon from time to time). It appears that I can walk ok and that everyone else was walking and climbing because the finish line was in sight and the finish tape was being unwrapped, this must be a mistake I thought, still trying to convince myself that I’d be first or second loser, well not this time….The prize – a rather snazzy women’s sunto GPS watch that Ste has his eye on, some bike cleaner for G and a slate trophy that apparently will “come in handy if the roof ever needs repairing”. Great day and definitely one to tick off the list!
Well thanks for that report Lara (and ‘G’, as without doubt he wrote most of it I guess). As most of you know Lara will always sell herself short (see what I did there….), this is without doubt one of the toughest half iron distance races around, it would be an epic achievement to podium let alone win – I guess we all know where to look now for race tips. Well done from all at the club.
