In Spring 2003, Dave and Cathy Green were asked by Wigan’s Sport Development team to coach a number of athletes from Wigan swimming clubs for an Aquathlon at the Greater Manchester Youth Games. Wigan went on to win this event, and so following this the athletes and coaches wanted to continue with the training and so in 2004, Tri Team Wigan was born.
Within months four of the athletes, under Dave’s expert guidance, were selected for the WorldClass Start squad, and since then the club has had several young members feed into the North West Regional Academy, aspiring to the Triathlon England Olympic Talent Squad.
Since then the club has been led by various chairmen, including Dave Linfoot and more recently Mike Myers, and today Stephen Hilton.
At the end of 2015 the club decided to change its name to Wigan Triathlon Club, and whilst we still aim to provide a focus for juniors, there is also a healthy adult and family membership. We have a broad range of members, from people who just like the training to those that race in their age group from sprint to Ironman distance. We also encourage participation in the individual disciplines of swim, bike and run.
